Springtime Activities to Connect Families

March 21, 2025

The air is warmer and the trails are starting to clear of snow and ice. The start of the growing season can be a good time to get outside and imagine all of the delicious berries and fish we have to look forward to.

If you’re venturing out with your class, consider inviting families. The extra eyes and hands can prove helpful. Families may feel more comfortable connecting outside of the classroom in spaces that are more familiar to them. Be sure to discuss roles and expectations before venturing off such as:

  • What are the boundaries of the area you will be exploring?
  • When is it okay to pick up sticks or rocks?
  • Do you need an adult to keep an eye on the stragglers during a walk?
  • What are some signals or phrases your class uses when something is unsafe or when it’s time to gather?
  • What are you hoping to explore or learn about together?

Of course, not all families will be able to join each expedition. The good news is that learning can continue at home with these berriessalmon, and plant activities. Studies have found that this type of interactive homework with families is one of the most effective family engagement strategies. It fosters conversations between parents and students and allows families to share their knowledge at a time and place that works for them.
