What might life look like 20 years from now? That’s the question eight Yakutat families explored together during a special evening for 4th and 5th graders, and the answers were as unique and inspiring as the students themselves.
Facilitated by the Alaska Association of School Boards and supported by local school staff, families, and students came together to dream big, reflect on their strengths, and think about the skills they’ll need along the way. Through a hands-on activity called “Packing the Backpack,” students recognized what they already carry with them. From time spent on the water to reading and math skills, leadership, kindness, beading, crocheting, confidence, and more, each student brought something meaningful to the table. They also shared the skills they are still building, like emotional resilience, computer literacy, and navigating life’s tougher moments.
The evening was about more than goals. It was about identity. Students and families celebrated where they come from and the strengths rooted in their community.
