This new study finds that the “connection between family engagement and student outcomes was not a surprise, but the magnitude was striking: the effect size of family engagement on chronic absenteeism was larger than the effect size of poverty.” Attendance rates, math and English Language Arts scores were all higher at schools with strong family engagement. The authors found that distinguishing factors of these schools included:
- Mindsets: Families as Equal Partners
- Leadership: Clear vision, inspiration, expectations & infrastructure
- Communication: One-on-one, academically focused, unwavering
- Relationships: Personal & enduring
