Building Capacity for Family Engagement with the North Slope Borough School District

May 22, 2026

Over the past few years, the North Slope Borough School District has worked with the Alaska Family Engagement Center to provide in-service training for administrators to start their school year off with some best practices for building relationships with families.

This year, district administrator Tracy Mulvenon also requested family engagement professional development for their district’s Home School Facilitators. The facilitators serve as the link between school, home, and community. Facilitators often speak Inupiaq and know the people and customs of the area.

Tracy worked with the Alaska Family Engagement Center’s Lisa Worl to schedule two family engagement trainings during the Home School Facilitators’ Professional Learning Community, which takes place monthly over Zoom. The training gave the facilitators tools they could use with students and families to help students keep calm and carry on (regulate). Tracy and Lisa scheduled a third family engagement training, which was offered to all staff in the district.

Tracy said of the family engagement professional development, coaching, and resources that, “AASB has been a wonderful partner in helping build Family Engagement Capacity with our staff. The AFEC relationship-building resources, like the phone call log and scripts, have helped all our teachers to have better, more positive phone calls.”
