Busy Hands, Meaningful Conversations: A Training on Engaging Families and Communities

March 13, 2026

Looking for meaningful ways to build stronger relationships with families?

At the Big Conversations and Busy Hands workshop this February, educators from across Alaska experienced how simple shoulder to shoulder activities can open the door to more natural conversations between families and schools. When people work with their hands instead of sitting across a table, conversations often feel more relaxed and authentic.

Participants beaded together while discussing Elluangcarluni, or self management, one of the Yup’ik Cultural Values included in the Lower Yukon School District’s Pulasaraq SEL curriculum. The activity created space for educators to share what students are learning in school and to hear from families about their values, experiences, and hopes for their children.

Twenty eight participants joined the session, representing the Lower Yukon School District (LYSD), Kuspuk School District (KSD), Lower Kuskokwim School District (LKSD), Bering Strait School District (BSSD), and Anchorage School District (ASD).
