Salmon is a vital, traditional source of food for the people of Alaska. In school, students are learning the indigenous names of the five species of salmon found in this region. Students are also becoming familiar with the Alaska Native ways of showing respect to the salmon as well as traditional ways of catching, preserving and identifying salmon species.
