We recently talked with parents of rising middle schoolers and found that the top thing on their minds is what their students’ daily schedules will look like. Lunch? Recess? Homework? Apps? What door do they enter through?
A parent/school counselor reflected that she was hearing a lot of anxiety. A helpful way to deal with anxiety is to gather information and make a plan. What’s more, when families feel calm and confident, they can better share those calm, confident feelings with their kids.
It was a good reminder to share information with families—maybe even more than you think they need to know, and in a variety of ways. From in-person “welcome back” events and phone calls to email, apps, and mail, keeping parents informed can have a massive impact on a confident start in middle school!
